Memphis Psychologist Salary Is Rising—but the Salary Is Still Low
Memphis psychologists who specialize in working with victims of sexual assault and domestic violence are making an average of $52,600 a year, a new survey finds.
This is more than double the average of other professionals who specialize.
In fact, the median salary for Memphis psychologists is $50,200.
The median pay for those who specialize on domestic violence and sexual assault is $42,200, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) report, which was released Tuesday.
The National Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapists (NACBT) has reported that Memphis psychologists are among the least safe professionals in the country.
The study is based on a survey of more than 7,400 Memphis professionals.
The survey also looked at the salaries of professional counselors, psychologists who deal with sexual assault cases, social workers, nurses, and medical professionals.
As of the end of January, the average salary for professional counselors was $59,400, while the average compensation for psychologists was $41,200 and the median pay was $39,600, according the survey.
For sexual assault victims, the survey found the median compensation for a counselor was $46,400.
Memphis psychologist salaries have increased by 7 percent in the past year, to $51,900, according it report.
For victims of domestic violence, the report found that the median salaries for professionals who deal sexual assault with domestic violence cases were $43,400 and the average was $34,200 for professional social workers and $30,200 in the case of nurse practitioners.
For nurses, the mean salary for nurses who work with domestic abuse victims was $37,400 in January, while average compensation was $32,400 for nurse practitioners and $28,200 the case for medical professionals, according NIOSH.
Memphis police officers, fire, and ambulance officers have the lowest average compensation of any of these professions, according this report.
Memphis firefighters make the lowest salaries of any profession, the NACBT report said.
The average compensation in Memphis police departments was $31,700, while firefighters earned an average salary of $35,400 at the city’s largest department.
For firefighter, the lowest pay was in the Memphis Fire Department at $23,100.
For Memphis police, the salaries for officers are $39 the lowest in the city at $32.80 an hour, the same pay for Memphis firefighters was $35.80, and the mean compensation for Memphis police was $43.80.
The salaries of Memphis firefighters were $46 and the pay for firefighters was just under $48 an hour.
For law enforcement officers, the pay was lower in Memphis at $27 an hour for the Memphis Police Department and $26 an hour in the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, according NACATB.
Memphis, Tennessee, is a city of roughly 13,000 people that is about half a million people.
The city is about a 10-minute drive south of Memphis, about 45 minutes from Nashville.
Memphis is the home of the National Guard.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the city has about 2,800 registered law enforcement employees.
The Memphis Police Bureau has more than 10,000 officers and has the most officers in the nation.
