As a former porn star, psychologist, and porn addict, Rachel Howard knows firsthand how harmful and harmful online porn can be.
But she believes that she can help people avoid becoming a victim.
“It’s a really important issue, especially in today’s society, that we treat mental health and addiction as separate issues,” Howard said.
“You can’t really talk about mental health, addiction and porn in a blanket way.”
Howard, who has worked in both mental health centers and treatment programs for more than a decade, says porn has a profound impact on a person’s behavior.
“There’s a lot of porn that is not very good, and there’s a huge amount of pornography that is really good,” Howards said.
“And you don’t know what you’re getting into when you’re looking at it.”
In the early days of the Internet, it was very easy to view porn for a few dollars, but then the cost of owning a computer, TV and even a smartphone got prohibitive.
Today, many of the most popular porn websites and streaming services charge more than $300 for access.
The problem for many people who are trying to stop porn addiction is that it’s hard to determine if they are a victim of online porn.
So Howard and other experts are working to help people who have experienced online porn addiction know what to look for.
To help people get better at recognizing the signs of porn addiction, Howard recommends watching porn that’s not pornographic.
“I’ve had clients tell me they watch porn to help them stop porn,” she said.
The most common symptoms of online pornography addiction are depression, anger, anger management, and anxiety.
“The first thing you’re going to see when you see a porn site is a lot more of the negative emotions associated with porn addiction,” Howar said.
That is, people are often anxious, depressed, and have trouble sleeping, she said, but don’t realize it.
“If they’ve watched porn before, and you see it’s very negative and violent, they’ll see the negative things that are associated with it and they will say, ‘I just don’t like it anymore,'” Howard explained.
“But that’s because you’re seeing it for the wrong reasons.
They’re not seeing it as a positive thing.”
For those who experience porn addiction and are struggling to stop, Howards suggested that they try to change the way they watch pornography.
“You want to get into the habit of doing it in a healthy way,” she explained.
“Do it in moderation, not for a long period of time.”
Howards also stressed the importance of keeping yourself clean of porn.
“Most of the time, we think of pornography as being something that’s very violent and scary, but it’s actually not,” she noted.
“It’s something that can be a really good way to be healthy.”
Howes work with a range of clients, from couples to single women.
For clients who struggle with pornography addiction, she offers online therapy.
“We’re always looking for people that are at a point where they’re at the point where their mind is really empty,” Howes said.
