The job of a psychologist is a crucial one, and one that requires a lot of time, patience and skills.
But some are making a lot more than that.
Psychologist Salary Guide 2017-2018 – Top 20 earners in the sectorThe average salary paid by a psychologist was $10.,732, according to data from SalarySmart.
That’s a whopping $6,000 more than the national average of $10 an hour, according the company.
According to the latest SalarySmart survey, psychologists employed in the top 20 per cent of the income distribution made $1,845,077.70 per year, while those in the bottom 20 per-cent earned $1.835,739.40.
More:Psychologists earned a median salary of $8.73 an hour in the 2017-18 financial year.
But those earning the highest salary were not necessarily making more than average.
They were earning much more than their counterparts in the other professions.
For example, a psychologist working in a mental health facility made $10 million per year in 2017-19.
However, the average salary of a full-time nurse was $14,903.55 per year.
And the average annual salary for an associate professor of psychiatry was $29,000.
While psychologists are not paid for their expertise, the amount of work that they do is important, said Associate Professor Heather Fagan, who specialises in working with mental health patients.
She said psychologists should consider the value of their work and pay attention to the number of hours they are involved.
“We’re the ones who provide the information,” she said.
“The rest of the world doesn’t have the same perspective.”
Psychologists in Australia have a range of careers, including psychotherapists, psychiatrists, psychologist assistants, counsellors, social workers, mental health counselors and social workers.
